Sebastian chose this particular spot because it was close to the ceiling and farther away from most of the other residents. He preferred to be alone when he was reading to avoid distractions. And lately his life had been full of distractions. One in particular. He'd been having trouble getting Alec out of his head. With Alec came a long list of other things and when his mind was set on thinking about things he had trouble sleeping or focusing on simple tasks.
He should have known accepting this opportunity, staying here in the Library, would change a lot of things. But he'd never imagined meeting anyone who made him want more. And he wasn't even sure what the more was he wanted. To live? To smile? Even though smiling hurt, it wasn't a bad hurt. It was an ache, an empty space where Jack had been and had made him smile and laugh. And now Alec had made him smile. Alec had made him want to smile.
He closed his eyes, closed the book, and took a deep breath. In, out. Then began again on the same page of the book he was holding. Sitting on the floor at the top of the stairs gave him space and quiet and the view he loved so very much now. It really was beautiful here in the Library he thought, eyes drifting past the book to watch a little bird perched on the railing. How could he not love a place where birds randomly appeared and followed him around. How could he not love a place filled with books. The only thing he was missing was music. And Jack. So very much Jack.
And Alec he thought chewing on his bottom lip.
He remembered the way Alec had talked about Magnus. It was a familiar feeling and he was stupidly jealous that they were able to come here together. But he was also happy for them because he knew what it was like to live without the person who filled you up with emotions and made you feel worth something. No one had made him feel like he was worth anything in a very long time.
Except Alec.
He wondered if Alec had given Magnus the gifts he'd bought him at the tourist shop and how Magnus had reacted.
Deep breath. In, out. And he went back to reading the same paragraph. Again.
